Physics 151: Computerized Recitation #13

Electrostatics & Electricity

This recitation will focus on the forces between charged particles and simple circuits. Please experiment with the Physlet simulations below and complete the required explanations and calculations on your worksheet.

Simulation 1: Charges and the Coulomb Force

Description: Five unknown charges are shown on the screen along with vectors representing the forces on each charge. You can click-drag on any charge to change its position. Start

Worksheet: Experiment with the positions of the charges and the resulting net forces. What can you determine about their values of charge? What can't you determine? Fully explain your reasoning.

Simulation 2: The Pendulum & Coulomb's Force

Description: Two like-charged 500-gram spheres attached to rigid light rods form a primitive electroscope as shown in the animation (position given in centimeters and time is in seconds).  You may drag the spheres to whatever position you wish before or during the animation. You can also damp the motion by clicking the "Damp Velocity" button.

Worksheet: Determine the charge on each sphere. You should draw a free-body diagram of the forces on a mass when it reaches equilibrium and fully illustrate the relevant calculations. Start

Simulation 3: Ohm's Law

Element 1        Element 2        Element 3

Description:There are three unknown circuit elements connected to a voltage source as shown.  The voltage is controlled by the slider and given in Volts. You can measure the voltage and current by placing the mouse cursor over either meter or by looking at the graph.

Worksheet: Determine which elements obey Ohm's law. Fully explain your reasoning.
