1. (4 pts) Examine the history of the concept of energy, known only a little more
than 100 years ago as "VIS VIVA" or "living force". Explore the early years of
this concept and write a one page essay, using your own words, about how vis
viva seems to have evolved into our present concept of kinetic energy. Be
sure to mention at least three famous scientists, or engineers, that contributed
to our present understanding of kinetic energy. Use at least three different
sources on the InfoMall and give a citation to each one.

2. (2 pts) Write, or find, a precise statement of the work-energy theorem and give a
complete citation if you are quoting it directly.

3. (2 pts) . A rubber raft of mass 90 kg floats past a dock at 1 m/sec toward the east. A
girl (mass = 60 kg) runs down the dock and jumps into the raft with a speed of 2
m/sec in the north direction. Find the final velocity of the raft and girl and the
fraction of kinetic energy lost in this collision.

4. (2 pts) (a) List the concepts you used to solve problem 3.
(b) Find a problem on the InfoMall that requires the same concepts for its solution.
Print it and give the citation for it.
(c) Work out the solution to the problem you found on the InfoMall
