Write a short essay, in two parts, and print it out to hand in on Thursday,
January 29th, at the beginning of class:

Today you were studying the use of Newton's Second Law to find out about
invisible forces. Use the InfoMall to learn more about a special part of this topic,
dissipative forces. These forces have such names as friction, drag, resistive
forces, etc.
The textbooks included in the Trove represent the views of more than 20
authors and about three different levels of textbooks. If we list them in terms of
increasing level of mathematics, they can be listed as below:
Conceptual Level Textbooks
Algebra-based Textbooks
Calculus-based Textbooks and Special Topics
(a) (3 pts)Find information about dissipative forces in onetextbook in eachlevel
listed above. Cut and paste into your word processor a portion from each selection.
Give the exact citation for each selection.
(b) (7 pts) Do a more complete discussion of
( i ) friction-give a definition of friction and describe how does it depends on the
shape and/or the mass of the object, the area of surface contact between
objects, speed or motion of the object, etc.
(ii) drag - give a definition of drag and describe how does it depends upon the
shape and/or the mass of the object, the area of surface contact between
objects, speed or motion of the object, etc.
