Simple Lens Handout

  1. Find and read three different discussions of simple lenses on the InfoMall:
    one conceptual
    one intermediate
    one advanced

Copy and paste a portion of each one, with its citation, into your document.

  1. Solve [i.e., given an object distance and the focal length, compute the image distance,
    magnification and state if the image is "real" or "virtual"] two simple lens numerical
    problems using the thin lens formula:
    a)one for a convex lens - do three different cases; i>2f; 2f>i>f; i<f
    b) one for a concave lens. Why is only one necessary for a concave lens?
    {Hint:You may make up your own given lens values or find appropriate numerical
    problems on the InfoMall}
    Show each solution with a ray diagram.
  1. How does the image formation of curved mirrors compare to that of simple lenses.
