HO-21Eddy Currents in Metals

Equipment:

Mounted magnets, Metal paddles (solid, closed slotted, open slotted),
Swing support, Tripod


Equipment Warnings:

*Be very careful with the magnets. Keep them away from the
computers as they can damage computers, monitors, and especially
floppy disks! These ones are especially strong. Be sure not to bring
anything magnetic too close or you may get your fingers pinched!!

Open a Word file to record the answers to the questions in the following
activities. Be sure to record the names of your group members.

  1. Describe the shapes of the three different paddles you have to use.
  2. Are the paddles made of a magnetic material?
  3. One by one, hang each paddle from the support. Raise it to a certain position and
    let go. Describe the motion. How long does it take each paddle to come to rest?
    Can you estimate its frequency?


Qualitative Investigation #1


Position the magnets so there is a gap of about 4 cm between them and position
the tripod so that the paddle will swing in the middle of the magnets. Raise the paddle
and let go.

  1. Record what happens for each paddle. Describe the effect of the magnetic field on
    this system. Why does this happen?


Continue your investigation by changing

  1. the initial position of the paddle.
  2. the size of the magnetic field (by changing the size of the gap)
  3. other?
  1. Based on your experiments, what can you say about the induced fields as
    compared to the motion of the paddle?
  1. Why do the each of the paddles react differently to the field? [Hint: look up eddy
    currents on the InfoMall.] Relate your explanation to Faraday's and Lenz's laws.
