Applying Electric and Magnetic Fields
HO-19 Today you will be able to do a classic experiment from modern
physics. Using the ideas you have learned so far about the influence of
electric and magnetic fields on moving charged particles, you will be able
to propel a beam of electrons into a magnetic field and, by measuring the
properties of the circuits, determine the ratio of the charge to the mass of
the electron, a fundamental constant of nature.

Create a Word file for you class work and include the names of your team
members in it. Send it to phys212@unl.edu when you have completed your
work on it.

Homework for Thursday.
We are ready to begin Lesson 9 on Thursday:
Lesson 9 Faraday's Law
9-1: Magnetic Flux and Induced EMF
Keywords: Magnetic Fields; Magnetic Flux; Faraday's Law; Lenz's Law; Induced EMF; Induced
Current;
OBJECTIVES: Determine the magnetic flux or the time rate of change of the magnetic flux for an
area in a magnetic field. Write the equation for Faraday's law in the form x = -dF
all terms with correct units. B/dt and define
9-2: Lenz's Law and Energy Conservation
Keywords: Faraday's Law; Lenz's Law; Conservation Of Energy; Induced Current; Induced EMF;
OBJECTIVE: For either a stationary circuit in a time-varying B field or a conductor moving in a
constant field, apply Lenz's law to determine the direction of the induced emf or current, and
explain your reasoning.
9-3: Applications of Faraday's Law
Keywords: Applications Of Induction; Faraday's Law; Induced Current; Induced EMF;
OBJECTIVE: Determine, using Faraday's law, the induced current and/or voltage for a situation
involving either (a) a stationary circuit in a time-varying magnetic field, or (b) a conductor moving
in a constant field.
HW-19 Due at the beginning of Class 20 11/6/97
1) Find three levels of explanation of both Faraday's Law and Lenz's Law
on the InfoMall. One a paragraph for each into your document and
give the complete citation for each.
2) In the InfoMall find and solve one quantitative problem based on
Faraday's law.
3) In the InfoMall find and solve one qualitative problem based on Lenz's
Law
