Abstract

This week long institute is an introduction to incorporating interactive activities using a CD-ROM, demonstrations and laboratories into physics lessons. The institute provides instruction in physics concepts for thirty-two pre-service or new teacher participants. Each half day a major topic in physics will be introduced by the staff using the Physics InfoMall CD-ROM materials. Each topic will be based on the concepts defined by the Science Frameworks for Nebraska Schools

The staff will perform some physics demonstrations and the participants will carry out a PRISMS laboratory experiment on this topic. The topics will be selected from mechanics, electricity and magnetism. Then the participants will work in small groups adapting physics lessons for use in their own classes.

The participants will be pre-service teachers from all colleges and universities in Nebraska.

Preference will be given to graduating seniors of Spring, 1997. Second preference will be given to people who have completed one year or two years of teaching. Third preference will be available to education students of junior standing during school year 1996-97.

The institute will carry three University of Nebraska graduate credits in Physics 870-T. Participants must complete the follow-up lesson development and classroom testing to receive a grade by December 31, 1997.

The institute will be run by a coordinating committee consisting of Professor Robert G. Fuller, UNL, Dr. David W. Brooks, UNL, Dr. Charles R. Lang, Omaha Westside High School and UNL, Ms. Roberta Himes Lang, Edgewater High School, Orlando, FL., and Julie Larson, Kearney High School. The institute will be hosted by Kearney High School staff and the institute staff and participants will be housed in a nearby motel in Kearney.
