The Department of Physics & Astronomy is made up of four basic research groups: Atomic, Molecular, Optical and Plasma Physics; Condensed Matter & Materials Physics; High Energy Physics; and Astronomy & Astrophysics. Graduate students are involved in projects like the study of nanoscale magnetic materials, they perform experiments to "stop" light and some even study the fundamental constituents of matter at some of the world's highest-energy particle accelerator laboratories.
