General Information
Electronic Shop Capabilities
The UNL Physics & Astronomy Electronic Shop primarily designs and repairs electronic instrumentation used for physics research. The Electronic Shop also supports the Center for Materials Research (CMRA).
We design, develop, prototype, manufacture, test, and repair electronics including computers. This includes analog and digital designs, microprocessor and computer interfacing. We specialize in laboratory instrumentation.
We can also satisfy most cabling requirements for any type of connection.
Our facilities include a HP 54540A 1GSa/s Digital oscilloscope, a Tektronix TDS350 Digital Scope, various analog scopes, LCR bridge, tube testers, various power supplies, function generators, multimeters, test computers and printers, and a large component stock (including resistors, capacitors, tubes, transformers, connectors, premade cables, wire of all types, and many misc. new and used specialty components), and a good electronics reference library.
We represent over 45 man years of electronics experience.

Other Work
Bob and Brian have also worked for UNL's Snow & Ice Research Group-Polar Ice Coring Office (SIRG-PICO), including field work in Antarctica and Greenland, since 1986. The work with PICO involves communications equipment, electronic, and general electrical design, fabrication, and repair. Past work with SIRG includes the design and development of borehole loggers, logging the data in the field, and analyzing the results. Recent work with SIRG, under a grant from NASA, involved the design and development of a Thermal Probe, a tool that melts down into glacial ice and samples the melt water. LabVIEW (TM) is used to display the data and probe tool characteristics in real time on several computer screens to the user at the surface. SIRG Thermal Probes have been tested in 1993 and 1994 at Summit Greenland and at Dye 2 Greenland in 1996. The 1996 probe had autonomous steering using a microcontroller in the probe.
